Google Play Music Gets A Huge Update

By Briana White

So it’s a rainy day and you are stuck inside the campus library finishing up a 12 page paper for your science class.  What music playlist is going to help you get through it?  Would it be the soothing sounds of Coldplay?  Or would it be the upbeat tunes of Rihanna?

Well Google is about to make that decision a lot easier for you!  Today the internet giant announced an update to the Google Play Music service that actually uses what is going on around you, to personalize your music.

Let me explain.  Google Play Music uses machine learning to figure out what music you like.  Then, according to your current location, activity, and even the current weather, the music service curates a playlist based on that criteria.  So in a nutshell — the service knows if you are at work, if you are flying, if you are at the gym, or if its raining outside, and it will deliver personalized music based on those circumstances.

It is important to note that this is an opt-in feature, so you don’t have to worry about privacy.  There us also a new offline feature that allows you to listen to your recent playlists, even if you loose an internet connection.

According to Google, this new update will roll out starting this week on Android, iOS, and the web.

Let us know what you think about personalized music.
